What are pointe shoes?
Every time I talk to someone about pointe shoes they immediately assume that it is a box maybe of wood, honestly if they were made of wood I would have quit a long time ago. BUT to burst every ones bubble they are not made of wood but layers of glue and a poxy. In a docuseries made by Royal Ballet all about pointe shoes. Royal ballet has a brand called Freed that they use and it is made specifically for them, each dancer has a shoe designer that makes their shoes and the dancer can make specifications about how they want their shoes to look.
A dancer and their pointe shoes, since they can’t really dance pointe without them mean everything to the dancer, it is clear to see the importance for them. Before the dancer can truly get the most out of their shoe, dancers have to experience all different shoes.
In America dancers don’t always get the opportunity to fine-tune their shoes that they have to spend time fixing the shoes themselves. Dancers here learn about how they need to take care of their own shoes, whether it is taking in the heel or fixing the wing of the shoe another example can be seen in the following video.
Every dancer needs a shoe that helps them preform, a shoe can make or break a performance… thats why the dancer takes such care of their shoes. At the end of the dance if your shoe dies while your on stage you need to know that you have other pairs that you could put on in a second. A point shoe is the dancers lifeline because it allows they to go farther and push the boundaries!
